Department of Microbiology
Microbiology is the study of the biology of microscopic organisms – algae, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, slime molds and viruses. These tiny, primarily unicellular creatures are studied and manipulated using different techniques than most other biological studies. Recombinant DNA technology amplifies DNA sequences and produces encoded products by use of microbes, mainly viruses and bacteria. Transferring genes between microorganisms or increasing their expression within them enables the use of microbial abilities to address environmental and medicinal issues. The ability of many bacteria to break down complex macromolecules in materials like wood or use gaseous nitrogen from the air for nutritional purposes sets them apart from other living beings. Scientists are working to design microbes that can digest wastes, fertilize agricultural land, produce desired proteins, and address other problems safely and affordably by altering the genes that govern these and other processes.
Microbiologists work in a wide range of industries, including public health, resource management, fundamental research, education, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural, environmental, food, and industrial microbiology. There are jobs available at the BS, MS, and PhD levels in each of these subjects.
About the Department
This PUPG centre, Wanaparthy, just created the department of microbiology, which is still in its infancy. The department was established in 2021 at the PG centre Wanaparthy, affiliated to Palamuru University. The department offers a 2 years’ Post Graduation course in microbiology. The total intake of the students is 60, and the college is located 4 kilometres from the Wanaparthy.
Currently, the department boasts three highly competent teaching faculty members who hold doctorates from Palamuru University. The faculty members have also written book chapters and research articles, and they have patents too.
